Mayor Wayne Brown read a proclamation recognizing National Safe Boating Week and urged residents who boat to follow life-saving practices.
CFO Jamie introduced the proclamation on behalf of the city and Mayor Brown cited national statistics, saying that “on average, 650 people die each year in boating related accidents” and that “the vast majority of these accidents are caused by human error or poor judgment.” The proclamation designates May 2024 for observance and encourages use of life jackets and other safety measures.
A representative of the Coast Guard Auxiliary thanked the council and offered free vessel safety checks, saying, “We do offer free vessel safety checks for anybody with a boat…we'll come to you, we'll go through your entire boat, look at all of your safety gear, and let you know if anything doesn't meet federal, state, or local requirements.” The auxiliary asked residents to contact them for checks and safety information.
The proclamation was followed by brief remarks and a photo opportunity with local commanders. No formal council action was required; the proclamation was presented as a ceremonial recognition.
