President Montero introduced a resolution recognizing September 2023 as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month in Tempe Union, citing national youth mental-health statistics and the district’s emphasis on early identification, intervention and comprehensive school-based approaches. The resolution text recited that suicide is the second-leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults aged 10–34 and referenced Mental Health America statistics about major depressive episodes in youth.
"Now therefore be it resolved that the governing board of the Tempe Union High School District number 213 hereby declares the month of September 2023 as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month in Tempe Union," the resolution read, and the board approved the measure on a 4–0 voice vote after brief discussion.
In board communications, Assistant Superintendent McDonald summarized large donations from the Arizona Cardinals and State Farm directed to athletics: $115,148 to Corona del Sol and $114,789.04 to Tempe High (both described as supporting weight-room and athletic improvements). McDonald said the partnership will be applied across campuses and that the district expects continued support for remaining schools in the coming year.
The board closed the meeting, confirmed its next regular meeting for Oct. 4, 2023, and adjourned.
