The Utah County Commission on Dec. 13 read and approved a resolution expressing appreciation for the county’s Jewish community and expressing solidarity with the state of Israel.
The resolution, read aloud during the meeting, cites a recent menorah lighting held in the historic courthouse and references Tabat of Utah County — opened in Lehi in 2022 by Rabbi Chaim and Estee Zappel — as a local Jewish learning center. It affirms "the importance of promoting educational programs that enhance awareness and understanding" and condemns "any form of discrimination, hatred, and intolerance, including antisemitism." The text also references the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks in Israel and states the commission’s support for Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign nation.
Unidentified Speaker S4 moved to approve the resolution; S2 seconded and voiced strong support, saying the item was "very crucial" and that the United States "embraces all cultures." The motion passed on a voice vote recorded by the chair as 3–0 in favor.
The resolution also calls on individuals and communities to promote peace, condemn violence and foster dialogue among diverse cultures and religions. The commission placed the item on the consent agenda after small procedural holds were resolved earlier in the meeting.
No public comment on the resolution was recorded before the meeting proceeded to the budget discussion.
