Superintendent Dr. Jay presented a draft set of goals he said were based on previously approved board goals and asked the board for input. "This is my first run at it," Dr. Jay said, inviting questions and noting he would return the goals for further action on November 15.
Board members pressed for greater measurability. One member said the draft lacked measurable objectives and requested quantifiable targets for items such as implementing new schedules and assessing their impact on student course-taking. Another board member recommended adding teacher-pay targets and asked whether the district was aiming for a concrete increase (for example, a 3% pay increase); board discussion suggested tracking retention rates with a stated goal—Dr. Jay referenced raising teacher retention from 90% to a target of 95%.
Dr. Jay said he plans to accompany the goals with "artifacts"—data points and documentation—when the district returns the items for final consideration. He cited examples he already tracks, such as reductions in online-only course enrollments, and offered to add explicit artifacts to show progress. The board asked for clearer metrics for staff collaboration time, outcomes from new scheduling and ACT prep, and a plan for surveying staff on workplace conditions.
The board did not vote on the goals; Dr. Jay will revise them to include measurable objectives and provide a formal presentation for the November review.
