The board voted to accept a certified staff member’s resignation and postponed a decision on the employee’s request to waive contractual liquidated damages so legal counsel can review the documentation.
The resigning teacher’s letter described behavior-management challenges in a grade-level classroom and criticized the district’s use of a reset/refocus room. District administrators and building leaders defended the refocus approach, said parents were notified when students were removed from class, and presented referrals and local data they said show the intervention reduced classroom disruptions. A building leader said the number of repeat referrals fell substantially after implementation and that parent contact and consequences were part of the protocol.
Board members asked whether one-on-one meetings with parents occurred and whether appropriate steps had been taken before the resignation. Superintendent Dr. Jay said he personally spent weeks addressing the concerns and that the district was able to bring in a veteran teacher, Linda Ness, as a replacement who improved classroom functioning. After discussion, a motion to approve the resignation while tabling the waiver request for legal review passed 4–1.
No changes to district discipline policy were adopted at the meeting; board members asked staff to send documentation and legal guidance about the waiver request and to return with answers before a final waiver vote.
