School committee approves revised K–2 report card with asset‑based language and 'I can' statements

The Lynn School Committee voted to adopt a revised, standards‑based K–2 report card designed to be clearer for families and better aligned with curriculum mapping.

Kelsey Bartlett, assistant director of early childhood, described the changes: a simplified rating scale (Mastery, Progressing, Developing, Beginning), grayed‑out boxes for standards not assessed each trimester, and "I can" statements to make learning goals student‑ and family‑friendly. The revisions aim to reduce confusing abbreviations and provide clearer feedback on student progress.

The curriculum team said the changes reflect recent curriculum mapping updates and that the team worked with K–2 educators, assistant directors and principals to design the document. The team plans to provide a guidance document for parents and staff and intends to integrate the report card into PowerSchool pending technical work with Matt Cronin and Emily Meacham. Translations in the district’s top five languages will be available after formal approval.

A motion to approve the K–2 report card provisions was moved and adopted by roll call. Members praised the asset‑based language and asked for timelines and family‑engagement support so parents understand the new format.

The report card change is slated to be used this year, with guidance and outreach planned to help families interpret the new format.
