Commission approves edited Growth and Prosperity Compact language after wording changes

The Utah County Commission voted to approve and authorize signing a resolution supporting the Growth and Prosperity Compact after commissioners proposed and accepted several wording edits.

Commissioner Lee proposed combining the compact's energy language so the sentence would advocate policies and programs that support responsible use and protection of public lands, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, clean air, open spaces, and continue to support sensible renewable energy and fossil fuels. He also recommended changing an attainable-housing bullet from provide to encourage, to clarify that the compact expresses goals and support rather than direct county provision of housing.

Commissioners discussed the tone of certain words used in the compact and agreed the changes better reflected county priorities and the cooperative nature of the compact. Commissioner Lee moved approval of the revised resolution; the motion was seconded and the commission voted 3-0 to adopt the edited resolution.

Quote: "I'll make a motion that we approve and authorize the signing of the resolution in support of the growth and prosperity compact as revised," Commissioner Lee said before the voice vote.

The approved resolution is nonbinding guidance intended to express county support for regional collaboration on natural resources, housing, and other compact goals.
