Board approves certificated staff performance-pay plan, policy JJJ revisions and supplemental reading list

A committee of teachers reviewed and revised the district’s certificated staff performance-pay plan and recommended board approval after meeting statutory approval thresholds.

Doctor Sweeney told trustees that committee members from all three schools worked through the spring to revise the plan and that the plan required approval by at least 70% of eligible teachers; she reported that the threshold had been met both collectively and at each site. Trustees asked for clarification on zone requirements (for example whether the five-hour requirement in zone 2 is total hours or per activity); Doctor Sweeney said it is intended as five hours total and agreed to clarify the language in the final draft before distribution.

The board then approved the certificated staff performance-pay plan for 2022–23 by voice vote. Later in the meeting, trustees completed a second reading and approved revisions to policy JJJ (extracurricular activity), and they approved a supplemental reading list for Fountain Hills Middle School: a packet-listed set of 12 novels for fourth- through sixth-grade classes that had been on display for more than 60 days with no negative feedback recorded.

Trustees praised teacher involvement in drafting the performance-pay plan and noted the plan includes multiple activity options across zones to allow staff to meet the service-hour requirements for performance pay.
