Utah State University presents 4‑H update to county commissioners, highlights local STEM programs and youth wellbeing metrics

Utah State University extension staff updated the Utah County Commission on local 4‑H programs, partnerships and youth outcomes during a work session.

Tom Bettis opened the presentation with background on the land‑grant mission and the 4‑H model. Dave Francis described program areas and outreach goals, and Melanie Ogan, the county 4‑H coordinator, reviewed county activities: community clubs spanning STEM, agriculture and family clubs; a new part‑time 4‑H STEM assistant (a BYU student) facilitating twice‑weekly STEM programming at Salem Library; and a countywide STEM fair planned for the fall supported in part by a small Facebook Community Action Grant.

Ogan shared results from an engagement survey of more than 5,000 youth over five years (informal survey methodology noted): 96% of respondents reported 4‑H provided a sense of belonging, 94% reported receiving quality life skills, 80% identified 4‑H as a potential preventative factor against risky behaviors, and 89% said they developed strong relationships through 4‑H. Commissioners and attendees praised 4‑H's impact, and staff agreed to provide slides or PDFs for the public record.

No formal action was required; the presentation was informational and commissioners asked staff to submit the slides and materials for posting on the county website.
