Utah County commissioners approve letter backing Sen. Mike Lee’s efforts to curb federal mandates

The Utah County Board of County Commissioners on a 3–0 vote approved a letter of support for U.S. Senator Mike Lee, saying the county backs his efforts to protect civil liberties and to shift certain powers back to states.

Commissioners discussed a list of roughly a dozen bills the senator sponsors aimed at limiting federal authority and vaccine mandates. One commissioner (unnamed S2) said, “I wholeheartedly support this resolution,” and framed the bills as restoring federalism and returning power to state and local governments. The chair described the item as a letter of support, not a formal resolution, and said the commission is “deeply concerned about civil liberties and preserving freedoms.”

Supporters argued the action is a symbolic statement aligning the county with efforts to oppose what they characterized as federal overreach on medical mandates. At least one commissioner noted constituent correspondence and similar actions by local officials in other counties.

The board made and seconded a motion to adopt agenda item 5; the record in the meeting shows the motion carried unanimously by the three commissioners present (tally reported as 3–0). The chair emphasized that the document is a letter to show the county’s stance and is not formatted as a formal whereas‑style resolution.

The commission moved on to other agenda business after the vote.
