Utah County commissioners voted to extend the county's local disaster declaration for flooding through July 31 to allow continued response work on standing water and associated mosquito mitigation.
The presiding commissioner noted the county had addressed “rushing water” concerns and was now confronting standing water that has led to "immense amounts of mosquitoes that may carry off small children," and recommended an extension to allow purchases of additional resources, including a drone and larvicides. Emergency Operations Center staff indicated either a 30‑day extension or an end‑of‑July date would work; the commission set the date as July 31.
The motion to extend the local disaster declaration was made and seconded; the chair called for the ayes and the motion passed on a voice vote. Commissioners indicated the extension was intended to preserve the county’s ability to procure necessary supplies and continue coordinated flood response while staff completes outstanding tasks.
County staff present told commissioners they would insert the commission’s chosen language (30 days or a specified July date) into the resolution and that the EOC could work with the commission’s direction. The extension will keep certain emergency purchasing authorities active while staff completes contracted and logistical work.
Next steps: staff said they would finalize the language of the resolution with the chosen end date (July 31) and proceed with the purchases and response activities described in the meeting. The commission did not schedule an additional vote on the extension beyond today's approval.
