At a retreat session focused on a SWOT exercise, Fountain Hills Unified board members and staff reviewed district strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and sketched several strategies to boost enrollment and program offerings.
Board members praised programs such as the Golden Eagle mentoring program and K–4 STEM as assets. Staff noted marketing efforts (Niche profile, improved signage and presence at town events) and urged new ways to reach the estimated 95% of households without students in the district.
On programming, the board discussed expanding concurrent or dual enrollment with local community colleges, using shuttles or virtual courses to give high‑school students access to classes the district cannot staff directly. The superintendent and staff described plans for a revised high‑school schedule (shorter courses, more elective choices and potentially tri‑mester blocks) intended to reduce teacher preps, increase elective access and help retention. Board members also flagged internship and bioscience partnership ideas as medium‑term opportunities to reconnect the broader community to schools.
Board members discussed consolidation and touring other districts to learn learning‑hub designs that could make the district more attractive to families and drive enrollment gains over 1–2 years once facilities and marketing are in place. Staff committed to follow up on potential college partners and to return with more specific program proposals.
