Commission renews school resource officer contracts at Muskegon Middle and High School

Public Safety Director Tim Kozel presented annual renewals of School Resource Officer (SRO) contracts covering Muskegon High School and Muskegon Middle School. Kozel said the SRO program has led to reduced calls for service at the middle school and cited a recent incident where an officer’s intervention prevented a gun from entering school grounds. Commissioners and staff discussed the program’s role — officers are assigned to address criminal matters and safety, not to substitute for school discipline — and praised relationship building between officers and students.

Commissioners voted to approve the annual SRO contracts and to continue coordination with the school district; Kozel and several commissioners encouraged continued recruitment and training investments to sustain the program.
