District launches committee to expand teacher onboarding and professional development

District leaders and teacher‑association representatives described the formation of a professional development and onboarding committee to improve new‑hire orientation and year‑long professional learning.

Presenters said the committee will consider expanding new‑hire orientation beyond one day, pair veteran mentor teachers with new hires (with stipends paid from Title II funds), and develop a coherent calendar for early‑release PD days so training time is meaningful rather than fragmented. Mr. Buckley noted Title II allocations of $9,000 per school for professional development and said the association hopes to allocate mentor stipends and release days to support mentoring. The committee aims to provide recommendations and a structured plan for onboarding and PD by the June board meeting.

Board members and staff discussed calendar constraints — including state instructional‑minute requirements and the effect on families when changing early‑release days — and agreed a calendar committee and surveys will be part of the process before any board action.
