Vendor pitches cloud camera and access-control upgrade for Fountain Hills schools

High-tech Networks representatives and a Verkada-focused vendor presented a proposal to modernize the district’s campus security cameras, access control and monitoring. The vendor emphasized centralized cloud management, remote mobile access, perimeter alerts, possible vape sensors, improved image quality and an industry-leading 10-year hardware warranty.

The vendor stated: "Verkada will provide access to cameras anywhere, any device, anytime," and outlined features including AI analytics, license-plate recognition and cloud archiving with guaranteed retention options. The vendor said the solution uses Power over Ethernet (PoE) for camera power and described the licensing model as a predictable 10-year renewal cost rather than a recurring monthly fee.

Superintendent Dr. Jay described the security challenge at the high school—a largely outdoor campus built before Columbine—and said a proactive perimeter-based alert system would save critical response time. Board members asked practical questions about power, existing wiring, what to do with current Panasonic cameras, whether doors can be locked remotely (access control would be a later phase), and how future upgrades would be handled. One board member observed that a 10-year warranty does not prevent the product from being technologically dated: "10 year warranty in this technology era ... This technology will be old news 10 years from now," she said.

The vendor agreed to provide the board with the presentation PDF and pricing details; Dr. Jay said district staff would follow up with the vendor and include Krista (district office staff) to review pricing. No procurement vote occurred at the meeting; the presentation was introductory and the board asked staff to return with cost estimates and more detailed deployment plans.

Security and privacy considerations were discussed generally (user access will be limited to principals, security staff and first responders; systems can share live links with first responders), and board members asked about protections against unauthorized access and a plan for replacing or disposing of existing equipment.
