Resident accuses St. Joseph council of partisanship in committee appointments

During the meeting's public comment period, resident Sarah Hochwinder of 1114 North Sixth Street spoke to the city council about recent appointment decisions.

Hochwinder said a candidate who had previously served without incident was not selected after what she characterized as the council's reversal and a revamp of the appointment process. She directly linked that outcome to the candidate's support for LGBTQ+ people and warned the change sets a dangerous precedent for committee participation in Saint Joseph.

"Who will choose to serve?" Hochwinder asked the council, and later said, "You have enabled the far right wing of the party ... to hijack an issue which should never have been given credence." She also told the council to "behave with foresight" and warned that such actions could discourage residents from serving on city committees.

Hochwinder additionally said the Saint Joseph School District followed the council's example in changing its appointment approach; the transcript records no response from council members during the public comment period. The meeting adjourned immediately after public comment.
