The April 24 meeting opened with a student performance and an extended recognition ceremony. Mary O'Dell, the Carmel High School FBLA advisor, and teacher Dave Salvo presented awards for a long list of FBLA students who placed in district and New York State competitions; students and advisors described chapter work, community service and state-level placements.
Administrators then recognized more than two dozen staff members receiving tenure this year across multiple schools. Principals gave short remarks highlighting the awardees' roles and contributions — from library media and special education to subject-area specialists and school psychologists. Principal Brian Piazza recognized eight high school faculty, and other principals highlighted tenure recipients at Matthew Patterson, Kent Primary/Elementary and George Fisher Middle School.
Why it matters: Tenure recognitions and student awards are routine but significant local matters, signaling staffing stability and acknowledging student achievement. Trustees and the superintendent repeatedly praised the students and staff for their dedication and community contributions.
Ending: The board took photographs with recipients and resumed the budget discussion later in the meeting.
