Commissioners advance proposed Axon contract amendment to Ways & Means

The Eaton County sheriff asked the Board of Commissioners to advance a proposed amendment to the county's Axon equipment and subscription services contracts to the Ways & Means Committee for additional evaluation. The sheriff said the proposed structure would recognize and manage individual police service contracts tied to Axon equipment, provide a graceful exit for individual agreements without financial penalty, and secure fixed, predictable pricing for five years to avoid higher future expenses.

The sheriff emphasized that the projected first-year cost is essentially the same as the current obligation and that delaying action could increase operational costs. County staff offered to provide additional data if commissioners wanted deeper review. A board member moved and a second supported advancing the item; the motion carried to send the amendment to Ways & Means.

No final contract was approved at the meeting; the board acted only to refer the proposed amendment to the committee tasked with financial review.
