District reports mixed results on Achievement & Integration goals for American Indian students

Theresa Engel, director of American Indian programs, presented the 2024–25 Achievement & Integration (A&I) year‑3 progress report at the Nov. 24 meeting. Engel said the district met several targeted goals for American Indian students: a K–3 reading goal (measured by aimsweb) was met at 81.5%, a transportation‑related attendance goal was met at 84% and a teacher equity objective (measured by pre‑/post‑assessments of certified staff) was completed.

Engel said some goals were revised for the new three‑year plan: AVID (Advanced via Individual Determination) was used to raise advanced‑class enrollment but was phased out and replaced with additional learning opportunities for fifth‑ and sixth‑grade students; a previously unmet multi‑district integration goal was replaced with a plan to develop a youth leadership program that will bring students across districts together.

Board members asked how the efficacy of the teacher equity work would be measured. Engel said the district used pre‑ and post‑equity assessments of certified teachers and noted plans to expand training based on assessment results, and that parent engagement efforts were evaluated qualitatively through communications and event attendance. No formal action was requested; the presentation was informational.
