Bend City Council proclaims 250th anniversary of U.S. Postal Service

Councilor Steve Platt read a city proclamation at the Nov. 5 Bend City Council meeting marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Post Office and urging support for the Postal Service’s public mission.

"The United States Postal Service is owned by the people and is a wonderful, national treasure," Platt said while reading the proclamation, which referenced the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 and highlighted the Postal Service’s universal‑service obligation.

The proclamation noted the USPS serves millions of addresses and described postal work as a source of good union jobs. Linda O'Donnell, representing the American Postal Workers Union Greater Oregon Area Local 555, thanked the council and emphasized the postal service’s role in local connectivity and commerce. A local union president also expressed gratitude for council support.

Councilor Megan Perkins moved to accept the proclamation; Councilor Megan Norris seconded. The council approved the proclamation by voice vote.

The proclamation asks the city to affirm support for USPS’s statutory public mission and to salute local postal workers who deliver mail, ballots and medications. The item was presented during the meeting’s "good of the order" portion and did not carry regulatory effect beyond the city’s formal acknowledgment.
