The Santa Barbara Historic Landmarks Commission voted Nov. 19 to adopt Resolution 2025‑13, designating 2025 Plaza Bonita a historic structure of merit for its intact Monterey‑style design by architects Edwards & Plunkett and its contribution to the Plaza Bonita setting.
Nicole Hernandez, the commission’s city historian, presented archival research and original drawings showing the house’s high integrity, including its Monterey balcony, garage tower and original windows. Hernandez said the property “qualifies as a historic resource under criterion 3 as the work of master architects Edwards and Plunkett.”
Neighbors Tom and Amy Jacobson, who called themselves stewards of the property, spoke in support. Tom Jacobson said the couple had invested in careful restoration and thanked staff and the commission for guidance. Commissioners praised the presentation and the owners’ stewardship. After a motion and second, the commission conducted a roll‑call vote and passed the resolution unanimously.
The designation adds the property to the city’s inventory of historic resources and requires that future alterations follow applicable design and review standards. Staff noted the designation will be dated 11/19/2025 and the commission signed the designation on the same day. The decision is subject to the city’s normal appeal procedures if filed within the statutory period.
The commission’s action recognizes the house’s architectural and historic significance in the Lower Riviera/Plaza Bonita area and will inform future reviews of changes to the site.
