Carmel committee debates shifting meeting hours and possible name change; students and council timing cited

The Carmel Climate Action Advisory Committee discussed a directive to move board and commission meetings into daytime hours after city hall hours were announced as closing at 5 p.m.

The committee chair told members the administration had asked that meetings be scheduled during business hours, but committee members argued evening meetings are important for student participation and public access. "We have 2 high school students that are committed to this committee, and that's they they can't... I do think for our committee, it's very important to have it in the evening," one member said.

Legal staff advised that city council sets the time and place of meetings, though the administration provides building access; several boards have retained evening hours for 2026 while budget discussions continue. Counsel recommended waiting for further direction rather than taking a committee vote at this meeting.

Members discussed alternative venues (for example, the library) and asked staff to explore options that would preserve evening access. The committee also discussed a possible name change from "Climate Action Advisory Committee" to a more inclusive "Sustainability" title to broaden appeal, while several members emphasized retaining the committee's focus on reducing emissions.

Planning for the committee's annual kickoff and council presentation also took place. Members penciled in Jan. 27 as the next meeting and discussed producing an end-of-year dashboard snapshot and a "state of the committee" presentation to council; the chair said officer elections typically take place at the January meeting.
