Council fills commission vacancies, debates role of council liaisons

The Tolland Town Council moved through appointments and a broader discussion of liaison responsibilities on Nov. 25.

The council appointed Rebecca Anderson as an alternate to the Inland Wetlands Commission. The chair thanked volunteers and noted increased interest in commission service. The motion to appoint Anderson passed unanimously.

Councilors then debated the function of liaisons to boards and commissions. Some councilors described the liaison role as active — attending meetings to answer questions and provide on-the-spot guidance — while others said many matters could be handled through minutes, e-mail or the town manager’s report. One councilor said attending every meeting can be burdensome and that selective attendance could be more efficient depending on the commission’s workload. Another councilor said certain commissions carry heavy workloads and benefit from council representatives who can offer immediate feedback.

No controversial appointments were recorded; councilors emphasized distributing liaison responsibilities to avoid overburdening any single member. Staff will circulate the appointment list and council liaisons will decide how to perform their duties within council guidance.
