The Public Safety Committee voted to suspend the rules and provide a favorable report so the city can continue paying Summit County prosecutors while staff continues negotiations for a new 2026 contract. Law Director Deb Mads told the committee the Summit County prosecutor agreement expired on Dec. 31, 2024; because negotiations for 2026 are ongoing, she requested authorization to renew the 2024 contract terms and price for 2025 so the prosecutor can be paid for work already performed.
Mads said the city still does not have a contract for 2026 and asked the committee to allow the 2024 terms to apply for 2025 while staff continues talks. Committee members moved to suspend the rules with a favorable report and the motion carried by voice vote with no opposition.
The action provides a short-term procedural fix to ensure continuity of prosecutorial services and payment; Mads said staff will continue to work with Summit County to finalize a 2026 contract.
