Wayne County committee accepts $197,616 MDHHS victim-services grant with no county match

The Committee on Public Safety, Judiciary and Homeland Security voted to accept a one-year grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for FY2026 crime victim supplemental funding totaling $197,616 to pay for one social worker and one victim advocate in the prosecutor's office.

Tony Guerrero, representing the prosecutor's office, said the grant is for $197,616 and requires no county match. "It's a $197,616 with no county match," Guerrero said. He added the prosecutor's office continues to pursue grants to limit pressure on the county general fund but that some federal grants are not being renewed; Guerrero noted recent comments from U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Debbie Dingell urging jurisdictions to flag federal grants so they can be supported.

Commissioner Khamenei asked what Guerrero meant by the office "being able to hold on to" certain grants. Guerrero replied that grants are being taken away or not renewed amid federal changes. Commissioner Daub moved approval and Commissioner Clementi supported the motion; the committee voted in favor and the motion carried.

The grant term is listed in the meeting as 10/01/2025 through 09/30/2026. The approval advances the agreement to the full commission for final acceptance and implementation planning.
