Boy Scout approved to replace three archery targets at West Bend range

A West Bend Boy Scout received commission approval Thursday to rebuild target stands at the city archery range as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Colin Healy, a member of Boy Scout Troop 226, told the Park and Recreation Commission he plans to replace the 10-yard, 20-yard and 25-yard target stands at 512 Municipal Drive. He estimated the project will cost approximately $1,900 — roughly $550 per stand — and said he has built extra contingency into the budget for cost overruns. "It's approximately $1,900 for the whole project," Healy said.

Healy said he plans to fundraise through community donations and brat fries and expects fundraising to be complete by early spring. He told commissioners he would begin building the stands in early May and aims to install them by May 16, but he added that the schedule could shift because of weather or concrete-pouring constraints.

Parks staff said they had met Healy at the range and asked him to match the commission's preferred target-stand design. Staff noted the timing of Healy's project fits planned upgrades: "We did get the DNR grant to renovate the archery range and those funds will become available to us after August," a parks staff member said, adding that the Eagle project would fall "right in place with our plans for kind of a revamp."

Commissioners voted to approve Healy's project and asked that the final design be reviewed and signed off by city parks staff before work begins.

The commission's approval is a project-level signoff; Healy told the commission any leftover funds would be donated to the city.
