FDOT says Atlantic Avenue widening is ahead in places; east segment out to bid in 2029

Florida Department of Transportation engineers briefed residents on the Atlantic Avenue widening and immediate construction concerns, with FDOT and consultant staff fielding questions about lane alignment, signage and bicycle facilities.

Ido Shimoni, a consultant overseeing Atlantic Avenue construction for FDOT, described two project sections and said the project overall is budgeted at about $26,000,000. He said the portion between Lyons Road and the Turnpike has paving completed and that traffic will soon be shifted onto new lanes. "As of last night, I can tell you that the paving has been completed for this portion," he said.

Shimoni described contractor work to add sidewalks, ADA ramps and pedestrian detection and said the project will expand two lanes to three in each direction in sections. FDOT staff confirmed the corridor will include bicycle lanes in both directions and described night work and temporary lane closures for paving operations.

Residents reported confusing temporary merges at the Atlantic/441 intersection and requested clearer signage; FDOT said that temporary lane configurations are expected to be resolved when the work reaches a final configuration (FDOT anticipates late summer next year for the area near Lyons) and that temporary traffic patterns will be adjusted in the short term.

What happens next: FDOT said the east-of-Turnpike section (Turnpike to east of Jog Road) is in design and expected to be out for contractor bidding in 2029; the agency will continue to post lane-closure advisories and meet with nearby businesses and residents about access.
