LA County ending building-safety services to contract cities prompts city planning transition work

The city manager informed the council that the Los Angeles County Public Works Building and Safety division notified contract cities it will no longer provide building-safety services. Staff said work on currently active county-reviewed projects will continue under existing processes but that the county'provided geo and building-safety services will transition away.

Staff said they are preparing options (including issuing a request for proposals and alternative private-sector models) and will seek council direction on the procurement model. The city manager said she will consult the Board of Supervisors and Supervisor Hahn's office about whether exceptions or a phased approach are possible for very small contract cities.

Council asked staff to prioritize projects by dollar threshold (so the county could continue to handle larger projects) and to plan communications for residents with active projects. Staff will return with options and an outreach plan.
