County extends surplus‑computer donation program to libraries, will wipe devices to MIL‑SPEC

IT Director Bob Kelly and Library Director Mr. Blackwell asked commissioners to extend a 2015 county resolution‑authorized nonprofit donation program to allow surplus computer equipment to be provided to the St. Mary's County Library for distribution to citizens.

Kelly said the county often offers surplus equipment to nonprofits and that response has waned; expanding distribution to libraries would allow functional retired laptops and desktops (and, in some cases, switches and printers) to be reused rather than auctioned. Kelly told commissioners that devices would be wiped using Mil‑Spec standards (multiple overwrite passes) and then reloaded with a basic operating system before transfer.

Library Director Blackwell said most devices would be distributed to citizens while approximately six would be retained for library meeting rooms and staff use. Commissioners asked about eligibility criteria and verification; the library said it would check that recipients are St. Mary's County residents and may coordinate with prior distributions such as the county's earlier Chromebook giveaways.

Commissioner Mike Alderson moved to extend the donation program to the library for distribution to citizens; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
