Library displays and a proposed Charlie Kirk memorial divide Citrus County residents

A wave of public comments at the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners’ meeting pushed the library-display and memorial debate to the front of the agenda. Multiple residents asked the board to place a temporary Charlie Kirk book display in county libraries and to consider naming a roadway for the late Charlie Kirk; others urged the county to prioritize local figures for recognition instead.

Steve Eller and Margie Eller, both Beverly Hills residents, requested a road-name designation and a one-time library display to honor Kirk as a champion of free speech. Other speakers—Deb Spence and several residents—countered that most county residents are unfamiliar with Kirk and suggested local volunteers and civic figures (for example, Ginger West, Corporal O'Hara, George Russo) as alternative honorees.

Commissioner Jeff Kennard and Commissioner Janet Barrick both urged the board to avoid ad-hoc decisions and instead develop a written library-display policy. Kennard said he had drafted a policy for the board to review and promised to circulate it before the next meeting; Barrick and others described existing library policies and recommended the board adopt a clear, countywide standard rather than deciding individual cases at the dais.

The chair noted libraries must have materials in hand to stage displays and confirmed the library is ordering additional materials; the board agreed to review the draft policy and avoid direct intervention in individual display decisions until a consistent policy is adopted.

What’s next: Commissioner Kennard will circulate a proposed library-display policy for board review ahead of the next agenda; the library will continue to order materials that would support a display if the policy allows one.
