Cornwall board debates filling vacancy after Eleanor’s resignation and decides to take no action

The Cornwall Central School District Board of Education spent more than an hour debating how to fill a vacancy created when board member Eleanor stepped down.

Board members outlined three options: hold a special election (which would incur election costs), solicit letters of interest and appoint a candidate after a public interview process, or leave the seat vacant and allow the BOCES superintendent to appoint someone after 90 days if the board has not acted.

Some members urged soliciting applicants and holding a short interview process; others argued the remaining term runs only until June 30 and that adding a member now could be destabilizing or unduly time consuming given a busy calendar that includes the superintendent search. One member suggested a neutral approach such as offering the seat first to the highest vote‑getter from past elections; others rejected that as potentially undemocratic or impractical.

After a nonbinding straw poll and extended discussion, the chair reported there was no majority to pursue filling the seat. The board agreed for the record to take no action at this time and to remain an eight‑member board; members noted they could revisit the decision later if circumstances change.

Board members used the discussion to pay tribute to Eleanor’s service, and the meeting moved to executive session for a separate matter before adjourning.
