Board member describes OceanWell Vision desalination 'pod' pilot; timeline and environmental questions raised

A Port Hueneme Water Agency member identified only as 'Sean' reported on a desalination pilot concept presented at a recent AWA meeting by a company called OceanWell Vision.

According to Sean, OceanWell's approach uses deep‑ocean pods placed at roughly 1,300 feet of depth so ambient pressure assists filtration, reducing the energy needed to desalinate seawater. OceanWell's current test configuration is in a lake; the company plans a deployment off Malibu in January and is working with Las Virgenes Water District on financing and testing, the speaker said. Sean summarized two principal technical challenges raised in the presentation: the energy required to push water through filters and the handling of concentrated brine; he said the company’s concept addresses those by relying on depth‑driven pressure and by back‑flushing brine into the ocean. "A realistic timeline before you could say for people in need, we can provide fresh water" was described as "probably 6 to 8 years," Sean said.

The comments were delivered as part of agency member reports; the board did not debate or vote on any desalination proposal at the meeting. The presentation raises potential questions about energy use, brine disposal and regulatory approval for ocean discharges — topics the agency did not resolve during the session.

The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 15 at 4:00 p.m.
