Council reviews seawall contract, street-light conversion and pedestrian safety concerns

Council reviewed several infrastructure and public-safety items at the pre-agenda meeting.

Marine Contracting Group: The council considered awarding an agreement to Marine Contracting Group for the seawall reseal/replacement program. A council member asked for a progress report showing last year’s work and how the contractor is balancing hurricane-damage repairs with maintenance; staff said they would provide a timeline and progress materials.

Street-light conversion and ownership: Staff presented an FPL street-light conversion opportunity. Council members noted multiple street lights remained out after Hurricane Ian; one council member clarified that some lights along U.S. 41 in their area are owned/maintained by FDOT rather than FPL and therefore repairs depend on FDOT’s schedule. Another council member added that older fixtures are no longer manufactured, complicating replacement and motivating the conversion to newer lights.

Trip-and-fall pedestrian safety: During public comment resident Wendy Mueller reported observing people tripping at the Olympia/Marion crossing due to a 2-inch drop and asked whether FDOT could be made aware of the hazard. Council member Janine Pope said she had reported the bumps as a safety issue but had not been told a timetable for remediation and would reiterate the concern.

Next steps: staff will provide a seawall progress report and timeline, follow up on street-light ownership/responsibility with FDOT and FPL as appropriate, and supply trip-and-fall incident data for city public spaces.
