The Lawrence Township Board of Education reviewed upcoming budget and operational items on Thursday as the district prepares its 2627 budget calendar and related actions.
Tom, the board secretary, said the district’s internal deadline for the 2627 budget development is Nov. 15 and presented a tentative budget calendar included on the meeting agenda. He also said the district is beginning to use AI tools to model student placements during realignment, which administrators said will help with communications and planning.
Finance committee members discussed custodial outsourcing as a way to maintain coverage during staffing changes, noting the program has been in use for about 15 years in some forms and that outsourcing would be limited to an evening shift at Ben Franklin Elementary School. Committee members said the pricing for outsourcing had been better than expected and that no layoffs are planned.
The board also heard that the district expects to sell remaining Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) next month and hopes to net "hopefully a couple $100,000 worth of revenue," according to the finance report; the committee said this would be one-time revenue in addition to ongoing energy-cost savings from district solar assets. The finance report did not provide an exact figure and characterized the amount as an estimate.
On procurement, the committee proposed continued use of competitive contracting for certain services, moving to a points-based scoring rather than lowest-price-only for selected contracts — specifically custodial services and environmental consultants were cited as candidates for a metrics-based selection process.
The personnel committee moved P1–P32 and the board approved personnel items and a set of new-business items (NB1–NB16) that included resignations, a retirement (Jose Santos, director of facilities/property), substitute appointments, salary adjustments and program approvals.
What happens next: administration will finalize the budget calendar and supporting materials, post the calendar and related documents, proceed with SREC sales and competitive contracting actions per committee recommendations, and implement approved personnel changes.
