RAC approves Bookcliffs Bison Management Plan with permittee input and 250 Bitter Creek herd objective

Clint Sampson presented the Bookcliffs Bison Management Plan to the Northern RAC on Nov. 12 and outlined committee deliberations and consultation with affected stakeholders.

Sampson said the committee included a tribal representative and that Division staff met with the local permittee (identified in discussion as Clay McKechnie) to determine tolerances for herd size on private allotments. The permittee recommended an objective of roughly 250 bison for the Bitter Creek herd; staff reported that level was used in the plan to balance sporting opportunity with producer concerns.

Sampson also addressed cross‑border movement and noted that migration into Colorado has historically been rare, but Colorado’s change in bison status beginning in January could change cross‑border management dynamics.

RAC members praised the committee’s collaborative approach. Robert moved to accept the plan and Garrett seconded; the motion passed unanimously.

The plan was adopted by the RAC and will guide local management and permit allocations for the Bookcliffs area.
