Polk County Veterans Services reports $83.2 million in 2024 benefits; office assisted 3,063 veterans

Melissa, Polk County’s veterans services representative, presented the office’s annual report to the commissioners, saying the key column to focus on is “compensation and pension,” which consolidates benefits for veterans, dependents and surviving spouses. She reported that the total benefits for 2024 were $83,229,930 and that her office assisted 3,063 veterans and their families in 2024 through phone, email and in‑person contacts.

Melissa described a local Huntsville Veterans Assistance program that in October helped five veterans with emergency needs including rent, mortgage, utilities and vehicle insurance. “So far this year, through October, I’ve had contact with 2,095 veterans and their families,” she said, and urged the court to view the compensation and pension numbers as economic benefits that veterans spend in Polk County.

Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the breakdowns (medical services, vocational assistance, insurance and rehabilitative services) and staff said the numbers reflected veterans who engaged the county office rather than the entire veteran population. The presentation concluded with an invitation to the commissioners to ask further questions and a note that the office continues outreach and intake assistance.

The court took no separate action beyond receiving the report; follow‑up requests by commissioners focused on understanding the data columns and the office’s continuing outreach plans.
