Brownsburg police say recovered firearms linked to other county shootings; federal weapons charges follow

Chief Joe Grimes told the Brownsburg Police Commission on Nov. 12 that weapons recovered during traffic stops have produced forensic matches linking them to shootings in Marion County and Lawrence.

Grimes said detectives working a Sept. 18 shots‑fired call at Legacy Park Drive identified a potential suspect and later recovered a firearm during an unrelated traffic stop that produced a NIBIN match to the Legacy Park incident and other shootings. "We got the firearms off the street," Grimes said, adding the evidence has helped Marion County investigators and is tied to additional case resolutions.

The chief also described a separate, long investigation led by Sergeant Tim Wells that culminated when federal partners arrested a suspect and the FBI adopted federal weapons charges. "The FBI has adopted the case as far as the weapons charges," Grimes said, and authorities recovered multiple rifles and assault‑style pistols during that probe.

Grimes credited interagency cooperation — including work with an Indianapolis gun task force and the U.S. Marshals Service — for locating violent suspects and said Brownsburg officers are training more gun‑evidence liaisons to improve collection and preservation of firearms evidence.

The commission received no new vote or policy directive tied to the investigative updates; Grimes said local prosecutors have at times indicated insufficient protocols to file local charges immediately, leaving some investigations ongoing as evidence and prosecutorial review continue.
