Brownsburg police investigate infant stillbirth; toxicology pending

The Brownsburg Police Commission was briefed on Nov. 12 about an infant stillbirth that the department is investigating because the infant’s family resides in the Town of Brownsburg.

Chief Joe Grimes said personnel were notified on Oct. 24 after the infant was stillborn at Riley Hospital and that detectives are conducting an investigation. "The mother alleged to have been an illicit substance abuser throughout her pregnancy," Grimes said, and detectives are awaiting toxicology results before prosecutors decide on any criminal charges.

Grimes framed the case as a community tragedy and emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. "This is a tragedy. Our hearts and thoughts go out to family and loved ones," he said, and he urged community members to share information that might help.

Commissioners did not take any formal action at the meeting related to the investigation; Grimes said the department will provide updates as toxicology and prosecutorial review proceed.
