Board approves consent agenda including personnel appointments and policy updates; one abstention recorded

The Somerville Board of Education approved a two-part consent agenda Tuesday that covered personnel appointments across preschool–grade 12 and districtwide policy recommendations.

Board members first approved items 1–22 (preschool–grade 8) on a motion from the floor. The motion was seconded and carried by roll call with the members present voting in the affirmative.

The board then moved to approve items 23–52 (grades 9–12 and districtwide). The motion passed by roll-call vote; board secretary roll call recorded that "Mister Garcia" abstained on item 33 and voted in favor of the remaining items. No other recorded dissent or opposition was recorded during the roll calls.

During discussion, a board member asked whether policy item 40 represented only routine stage updates or a provider change. Superintendent and administrative staff responded that the policies were recommended by Strauss (district counsel) in response to statute changes and that, apart from procedural adjustments, there were no substantial material changes. The president noted that committee realignment language will be reviewed again at the December meeting before final approval.

The consent agenda also included the onboarding of two administrators introduced earlier in the meeting: Karen Gebruch (substitute assistant principal at Vanderveer) and Cruz Garcia (supervisor of humanities), both welcomed by the board.
