Community and staff thank longtime board member Sergio at Somerville meeting

Several speakers used the public-comment portion of the Somerville Board of Education meeting to thank longtime board member Luke Sergio for his service to the district.

Jamie Bartuschak, a community member, said he "came out of retirement" to thank Sergio for his "many years of meritorious service," citing appearances at football games, band events and league activities. Sharon Brinick, president of the Somerville Education Association, echoed that praise and noted the value of board engagement with school activities and candidate outreach.

Multiple board members and commenters underscored Sergio’s visibility at events and his involvement with extracurriculars. One commenter described Sergio as "the pioneer's biggest fan" and credited him with building school spirit across athletics and the arts. Several speakers said they would miss Sergio’s reports and presence at events.

The president invited additional speakers, thanked those who ran for elected office, and moved the meeting forward to routine agenda business after public comment.
