Sterling Heights council sworn in; members pledge focus on trails, transparency

A district court judge administered the oath of office to Sterling Heights' newly elected mayor and city councilmembers during a special meeting, after the council received the board of canvassers' report, Mayor Pro Tem Liz Swarovski presided.

"I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and that of the State of Michigan and the charter of the City of Sterling Heights," the judge led as the newly sworn members repeated the oath.

Several newly sworn and returning councilmembers made brief remarks. Councilmember Maria G. Schmidt thanked voters and family and said, "I only have my integrity and that's how I lead," adding she will continue to serve with that approach. Councilmember Michael V. Radke Jr. said his "first goal is always to make this city the best city to live in in the state of Michigan," and highlighted plans to extend the ITC trail and improve bicycle access to parks. New councilmember Robert Majek thanked petition signers and the city clerk's office for guidance on candidacy procedures and said he looks forward to working with colleagues.

Councilmember Henry Yanez, who noted his background in emergency services and state office, emphasized the responsibility of representing all residents and said he will work on transparency and communication. Mayor Pro Tem Swarovski closed the remarks by thanking family and supporters and congratulating colleagues and departing councilmember Diana Koski.

During the public-comment portion, resident Mr. Shea thanked the city for the veterans memorial between the police station and city hall and welcomed the new council member. A representative of city administration congratulated the council and previewed a citizen survey presentation scheduled for the council's December meeting.

The council conducted two routine procedural motions by voice vote — approving the meeting agenda and adjourning the special meeting — with no recorded opposing votes. The meeting then adjourned.
