Board approves $2.28 million bid to replace Allison Elementary HVAC

The School Town of Speedway board approved a contract to replace the HVAC system at Allison Elementary after hearing a recommendation from district staff.

Staff recommended accepting the low/base bid from Sexton Mechanical Company for $2,195,000 with an alternate of $85,850. Speaker 3 moved to approve the base bid and the alternate together; Speaker 1 seconded. The board approved the bid 4-0.

Speaker 5 summarized the construction timeline and constraints, saying work will begin "as soon as we start receiving parts," and that several classrooms are currently empty. To avoid testing and classroom disruption, the addendum allows work in an after-hours window "in that 3:30 to all the way to 7 a.m. time frame," with work shutting down when school is in operation. The presenter said substantial completion is expected before the 2026-27 school year and final completion in October, with remaining mechanical-room work to follow.

The scope includes complete replacement and renovation of Allison Elementary's HVAC, new energy-efficient equipment and individual room temperature controls, replacing a system that has served the building for more than 60 years. Three companies submitted bids for the project.

The board recorded the vote in the minutes and approved the contract as recommended.
