Seattle School District picks Ben Scholdner as next superintendent, authorizes contract talks

The Seattle School District No. 1 Board of Directors voted unanimously Wednesday to select Ben Scholdner as the district's next superintendent and authorized the board president and vice president, with legal counsel, to negotiate an employment contract to be presented to the full board for approval.

The decision came at a special meeting called to order at 4:30 p.m. and followed months of a confidential national search paired with broad community engagement. "More than 3,000 people participated in surveys, focus groups, and conversations that shaped our profile," President Toph said, describing the board's priorities of centering students, leading with equity, strengthening the district's financial foundation and improving communication.

President Toph moved the motion selecting Scholdner and authorizing contract negotiations; Vice President Briggs seconded. After brief connection and audio issues during roll call, the chair announced that the motion had "passed unanimously." The board also directed that any negotiated contract be returned to the board for final approval.

Scholdner, who addressed the auditorium after the vote, described a 25-year career in education that includes classroom teaching, school principalships, a stint on the New York City school board and leadership roles in professional education organizations. "I believe our goal today is to make Seattle the single greatest urban school district in America," he said, adding that he was "so thrilled to be your superintendent" and looked forward to starting work.

Board members used the meeting to acknowledge the work of the search process and the time required of the board president to lead it. Directors Rankin and Sarju offered brief remarks thanking President Toph for running the process and emphasizing the board's focus on students.

Administrative staff said Scholdner is expected to begin in early 2026. The board announced a press conference in the auditorium immediately following the meeting and adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
