Votes at a glance: Van Zandt County Commissioners Court actions on courthouse property, public safety and operations

At its meeting, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court recorded the following formal actions and outcomes.

Authorize county judge to close on Paul Michael building (Item 4)
The court approved authorizing the county judge to sign closing documents for the purchase of the Paul Michael building at 1930 North Trade Days Boulevard for $4,200,000 and authorized payment from the general fund. County staff said the contract was renegotiated to include a $200,000 escrow and a November closing date; an earlier $60,000 escrow had been forfeited under a previous contract. Court security officer certification (Item 5)
The court approved payment and participation for a court security officer certification course for sheriff's deputies assigned to courthouse security. Commissioners discussed travel and purchase-order rules for airline tickets and directed that any airfare be presented to the court consistent with county policy.

Taser purchase for sheriff's office (Item 6)
The court approved procurement of 35 tasers and associated licensing/evidence/training packages (vendor quote approximately $181,986.20). Commissioners discussed paying in full from returned sheriff's office funds versus using a five-year payment plan; an approval was made contingent on the district attorney's review of any contract terms and indemnification language. The sheriff indicated returned budget funds totaling roughly $904,441.38 and that the purchase could be covered from contingency if necessary.

Van Zandt County Appraisal District board votes (Item 7)
The court divided the county's allotted 1,412 votes among the four nominees for the appraisal district board so each candidate receives an equal share. The nominees on the ballot were Christy Beckham, Clay Nicholas, Kyle Thompson and C.W. Wilson Jr.; court members heard brief statements from two candidates present.

Communications and procurement actions
- The court approved a renewal of the service agreement with People's Communication Inc. to increase bandwidth for the sheriff's office and jail at the same cost (Item 8).
- The court authorized issuing an RFP for unblended road oil, soil cement and lime after earlier bid packages omitted those items (Item 10).
- The court approved a memorandum of understanding to loan four portable radios to the City of Canton while that city transitions to the county radio system (Item 11).

Grants, recognitions and consent
- The court authorized the county judge to apply for the Fiscal Year 2026 rural law enforcement salary assistance program (approximately $500,000) to support deputy and jailer salaries (Item 12).
- The court approved a resolution to light the courthouse green Nov. 4'11 in recognition of veterans ("Operation Green Line") (Item 13).
- The consent agenda (Item 14) was approved; commissioners directed staff to apply about $35,000 in invoices to a prior fiscal-year purchase order where appropriate.
