Leesburg airport not yet affected by controller downsizing; staff monitoring national impacts

Connor, who represents airport interests at the meeting, briefed the commission Nov. 5 on national controller staffing developments and possible impacts for Leesburg.

He said Secretary Duffy announced that roughly 40 U.S. airports may begin downsizing or reducing some operations, and that the pattern is likely to affect the Northeast and other congested airspaces first. "Our airport right now has not been affected or not been affected to anything that I've seen," Connor said. He noted that Leesburg operates as a pilot-controlled Class D facility at night, which reduces the need for continuous air-traffic control staffing.

Connor said local operations had continued without visible change but added he expects reduced operations at some larger hubs could cause cascading delays that affect travelers to and from the Dulles area. He urged travelers to arrive early and warned that cancellations and delays were possible ahead of the Thanksgiving travel period.

The commission heard that the airport has hired Delta Airport Consultants for a narrowed master plan to study use of current airport property and a 40-acre parcel that became available with the Compass Creek annexation; that study is intended to explore aeronautical and compatible business uses, such as drone or aerospace manufacturers.

No formal action was taken; commissioners asked staff to continue monitoring regional air-traffic developments and to report back if local operations change.
