Board keeps superintendent salary range, posts interim job with tribal‑collaboration language

Board members discussed parameters for both the permanent and interim superintendent searches. After reviewing comparative data and consulting the Alaska School Boards Association (ASB), members kept the permanent superintendent salary range at $145,000 to $175,000. Board members noted that the base salary does not include benefits, moving or other negotiated items and that those elements can be negotiated in final offers.

ASB advised pausing public posting of the permanent superintendent brochure until the board finalized its decisions; the board asked staff to delay posting until they confirmed the salary range and other parameters. Members also discussed the importance of funding key administrative positions (curriculum director, special‑education leadership, etc.) to support a future superintendent.

On the interim search, the board reviewed a draft posting prepared by HR staff and asked for an explicit tribal-collaboration duty to be added. The board moved to amend the interim posting’s duties so that item 7 would read, in effect, that the interim superintendent "shall provide a leadership role with the staff, tribes and community to affect the advancement of the educational program." The motion to add tribal collaboration passed 7–0. The interim posting was to be published the following day, remain open through Nov. 19, and a special meeting was scheduled for Nov. 20 to review applicants.
