City Manager Ken Filipiak briefed council on several operational and economic-development items. He said rooftop HVAC units were installed at the Recreation Center and that the mezzanine area and basketball courts would be closed Nov. 4 for fitness-center HVAC placement. The rear parking lot at the soccer center is scheduled for resurfacing Nov. 5 and will be closed during the work.
Filipiak said the city expanded weekly yard-waste collections from 12 to 25 units per household for Oct. 27–Dec. 12 (one unit = one bag, one bundle or one container). He also announced nighttime work to replace asphalt expansion joints on State Route 615 bridge over Interstate 90 beginning at 7 p.m.; traffic will be restricted to one lane with flaggers and the work is expected to take five to six hours.
On social services, Filipiak said the city has partnered with the Lake County Council on Aging on a pilot emergency snow-plowing assistance program called Operation Snow Lift for residents age 62+ who meet income criteria; roughly half of the 74 available positions were filled as of the report.
On economic development, Filipiak announced Mentor was named a "Premier Life Sciences Ready Community" by the Ohio Life Sciences Association — one of three communities in Ohio and the only community in Northern Ohio to receive the recognition. He described recent visits from British and Irish companies considering Mentor for U.S. operations, including Dignity Care, GEM Nutrition, Amethyst Care and Nomad Counters. At the meeting, Nomad Counters’ device was shown; staff said the firm plans to position its first U.S. device in a city park and explore manufacturing assembly in Mentor, though specifics on investment and job counts were not yet available.
Filipiak also reminded residents of the Veterans Day ceremony at 11:11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2025, at the Mentor Municipal Cemetery Memorial Promenade and said the keynote speaker will be retired Marine Brig. Gen. Peter Collins. The city will participate in Operation Green Light by lighting the Mentor Municipal Center green Nov. 4–11.
Why it matters: The announcements affect residents' use of city facilities, show targeted senior support and highlight business recruitment efforts for the life-sciences sector that may lead to future local investment.
