Miami Lakes council to present Charter Revision Commission appointments at November meeting

Councilmember Alejandro Sanchez moved at a special-call meeting that the Town of Miami Lakes prepare a resolution at the November regular council meeting to appoint and fund a Charter Revision Commission, as required every 10 years by the town charter. The motion passed unanimously.

Sanchez cited town charter section 7.4, which establishes the ten-year commission schedule. The town clerk noted the administrative steps used in prior cycles and reminded the council that if charter amendments are to appear on the Nov. 3, 2026 general-election ballot the municipality must meet an administrative deadline (the clerk gave the deadline as July 24). The clerk also summarized the prior commission's timeline: preliminary organizational meetings in December followed by meetings in JanuaryMarch, with the town previously using a mail-in ballot option.

Councilmembers and the clerk discussed logistics: each council member will bring a proposed appointee name to the November meeting, and the clerk will prepare a resolution that will be finalized and executed after the roll call. The clerk said the commission typically holds an organizational meeting soon after appointments to elect officers, set calendar dates and establish meeting rules.

Council voted to ask staff to prepare the November resolution and to advise appointees of the commission's organizational meeting and schedule. No charter amendments or ballot language were proposed at this meeting; the item concerned only scheduling and appointments.
