Pennridge committee recommends FOSS Pathways for grades 3–5; Mystery Science to remain for K–2

Pennridge School District curriculum staff recommended that the board adopt the FOSS Pathways science program for grades 3–5 and continue Mystery Science for kindergarten through grade 2 to preserve continuity while managing costs.

K–12 science supervisor Christine Tamberino told the committee teachers had been using a mix of older FOSS kits and digital supplements but that the district lacked cohesive STEELS‑aligned materials across its seven elementary schools. The district reviewed multiple vendors at a Bucks IU vendor fair and examined middle‑school experience with Twig Science (approved in 2023), concluding FOSS Pathways best met criteria for hands‑on investigations, literacy integration and publisher professional learning supports.

Tamberino outlined a vendor payment structure intended to reduce year‑one budget impact: the vendor proposed paying 40% of the materials cost in year one and 20% in years two through four, with an annual ongoing charge for consumables and digital licenses. Staff noted the district’s current elementary science consumables budget is $45,000 and presented vendor figures for committee review. Administrators said the adoption would be placed on the Nov. 17 board agenda with program funding budgeted in fiscal year 2026–27.

Board members and staff discussed continuity between K–2 Mystery Science and the proposed 3–5 FOSS rollout, parent/fiscal impacts, and a multi‑year refresh cycle (roughly six years) to keep materials current with state standards. No formal board vote was recorded in the committee transcript.
