Lifeguard unit reports rescues, beach closures and active sand replenishment projects

Lifeguard staff reported quarterly beach operations statistics to the Community Safety and Welfare Committee on Oct. 28, noting high visitor volumes, rescues and ongoing sand‑replenishment work.

Ron (lifeguards) said the unit recorded more than 13,000 visitors and over 13,000 calls for incidents across the reporting period, including 160 distressed swimmers rescued and 174 medical aids. Lifeguards reported nearly 4,000 preventative actions, 6,400 public‑education contacts and multiple ordinance enforcements; eight missing persons on beaches were reunited with family.

Staff updated the committee on sand delivery work by OCTA (about 2,500 cubic yards delivered in late August/early September) and active beach‑access closures during weekday construction hours for area‑3 replenishment work. The lifeguard unit announced an open recruitment and invited referrals.

Committee members thanked lifeguards and noted procedures for contacting ranger headquarters for trail access and other services. No action items were taken.
